This is an Original, Hand made American Red Snapper (ARS) Gyotaku made with acrylic ink on Thai Mulberry paper. The eye is meticulously painted to match the real thing using watercolor paints. This is a raw print, meaning no touch-ups have been made beyond the eye—highlighting the authentic impression of the fish as it was caught.
The artwork was flattened using traditional Urauchi wet-mounting methods and backed with an additional layer of Thai Mulberry paper for preservation and structure.
Each original is hand signed and sealed with my Japanese Hanko (name stamp) for authenticity.
This particular Red Snapper was speared out of Sarasota, Florida, in 127 feet of water. It measured 29"—the largest ARS I’ve taken to date.
Gyotaku is a traditional Japanese method of fish printing that originated in the mid-1800s as a way to document memorable catches. Today, it continues to be a meaningful and visually striking art form that brings the sea’s beauty into your home.
